In a previous post, we raised a very interesting and compelling question: After Staying So Long in the Lime Light, is Facebook Stealing the Camera from Google?! and our answer was yup, yes, you bet, duh! …you name it.

Well, the 2011 predictions of the two internet giants seem to agree with us particularly with regards to social search. Let’s shed some light on some of the hottest predictions on both them…

"social media prediction 2011"

Yes, Facebook Will Conquer the Web in 2011 But….

Top 5 Facebook predictions this year:

  1. Facebook credits will give the green light to incorporating social commerce into Facebook (we will dedicate an upcoming post to discuss this issue in details)
  2. Unlike Yahoo and Google who hired more experienced CEOs, Mark Zuckerberg will maintain his well-deserved CEO position.
  3. In spite of all the fuss about Facebook IPO since 2007, chances are high that 2011 will not witness any steps in that direction. According to Business Week: “Facebook would benefit from another year of growth absent the added scrutiny that comes with a public listing,” The bottom line is that as long as Facebook enjoys strong growth metrics, it will abstain from public markets. However, once it hits a certain saturation point (probably in 2012), Facebook will go public.
  4. Facebook will continue to face challenges with regards to its International expansion plans in China and Japan
  5. In spite of the none-stop enhancements in Facebook Privacy Model, many people are still unhappy with many privacy issues and will continue to feel this way in 2011!

Will Google Remain Anti-Social in 2011? Go Figure!

Google does recognize the importance of incorporating social aspects and has been relentless in doing so in the past without meeting any tangible success. For example, Google took the easy route of trying to start big by negotiating a $6 billion dollars acquisition offer with Groupon… but Groupon were intelligent enough to turn it down! Also, “Google+1” was vaguely announced but its when’s, what’s and how’s remain confidential until….nobody knows!

How about 2011? Will social Google see the light this year? Chances are slim!

Google Predictions for 2011:

  1. Here is one prediction in favor of social Google: Google will acquire Disqus to enhance blog commenting experience
  2. ”Google+1” will see the light, but people won’t be so thrilled about it!.
Google+ 1 is basically a toolbar that will appear on top of Google’s properties and will include a Share Button, a Google username as well as some additional features. Google+1 will support loops – a synonym of groups. This basic information doesn’t sound so impressive and Google’s vague announcements doesn’t make it any better:

“We’re always experimenting with new ways to improve our products, and we have already confirmed that we are focused on incorporating social elements across Google. But we have nothing new to announce at this time.”
  3. On the plus side, Google’s search capabilities are slowing not down: Chances are high that Google will provide voice/visual search desktop features
  4. Google will implement a new HTML5 interface for Gmail that loads faster, allows offline email storage and integrates with other Google apps including Google Docs and Google Calendar
  5. Google Docs users will enjoy at least 20 GB of storage this year
I guess the most interesting and thought provoking Google-Facebook prediction that sums up all of the above is: Google will become the next Microsoft and Facebook will become the next Google! What do you think? Do the above predictions make sense to you? What else would you add to them? We are so eager to find out :)
